Abstract

Introduction: Strenuous physical activities cause an increase in free radicals, physical stress, psychological stress and decreased immunity. Psychological stress affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis leading to increased levels of cortisol and blood cell apoptosis. However, the studies on the effect of strenuous physical activities on cortisol levels and leukocyte count showed inconsistent findings. Objectives: To examine the effect of strenuous exercise on cortisol levels and leukocytes count.Methods: In this study with post test only control group design, 15 male BALB/c mice were randomly assinged to the following 3 groups: control (non-exercised) group (G-0), once strenouse physical activity (G-1), 3 times strenuous physical activity (G-2). Cortisol levels were evaluated by ELISA.White blood count was determined. Data were analyzed by one way ANOVA test followed by Post Hoc and Pearson, with a confidence level of 95%.Results: The mean cortisol level in group G-0, G-1, G-2 were 11.86 ± 2.10μg/dL, 32.00 ± 0.86μg/dL, 44.58 ± 1.74μg/dL respectively. The number of leukocytes in G-0, G-1, G-2 were 6180±540.37/mm3, 4650±217.94/mm3, 4180±130.38/mm3 respectively. One way ANOVA showed a significant difference between groups (p <0.001). Post Hoc Test showed that the levels cortisol in G-1 and G-2 were significantly higher than thatof G-0 (p <0.001). The number of leukocyte in G-1 and G-2 was lower than that of G-0 (p <0.001). There was a significant negative correlation between cortisol levels and the number of leukocytes (r = -20.14, p <0.001).Conclusions: Strenuous physical activity increasescortisol levels and decrease the number of leukocytes in BALB /c mice.

Abstract

Introduction : One of the free radicals that can damage facial skin is coming from UV radiation of the sun. Free radicals are the main factors that can accelerate the early aging process. The administration of antioxidants are believed to increase immune system of the body especially to prevent skin aging.Objectives: to determine the antioxidant activity of the corn silk extract and cream formulation. Methods: Corn silk were extracted by maceration using 80% ethanol for 5 days. Determination of antioxidant activity was conducted using 2,2-diphenil 1-pichylhydazyl (DPPH). Optimization of the preparation formula using expert design by varying the concentration of tween 80 and spam 80. The evaluation of cream preparation included homogeneity, organoleptic, pH, adhesion, dispersive power and power irritation to the skin.Results: IC50 corn silk extract were obtained 30,03 ppm with AAI(antioxidant activity index) values of 3,33 ppm. From the results of evaluation of 8 formula indicates a homogenous cream preparation, evaluation of the organoleptic have a brownish-white color and does not become rancid, pH 6.5, adhesion range of 0.12 to 0.5 seconds, dispersive power from 5.1 to 7.3 cm and power irritation of the skin that show the results slightly irritating. Formula optimum dosage creams containing extracts of corn silk 0.0315%; propylene glycol 2.1%; 4.5% tween 80; Span 80 5.5%; sorbitol 20%; 5% stearic acid; VCO 20%; citric acid 0.7%; ascorbic acid 0.06%; Triethanolamine 2.45%; methyl paraben 0.25%; propyl paraben 0.15% and add distilled water 100ml.Conclusion: Corn silk extract (Zea mays L) has a very strong antioxidant activity and for the optimum cream formulation has comparison between emulsifier tween 80 and span 80 is 4.5% to 5.5%.

Abstract

Aging may be defined as the time-dependent deterioration in function of an organism associated with or responsible for the increase in susceptibility to disease and probability of death with advancing age (Harman, 1981; Cefalu, 2011). Generally, the aging organisms are characterized by both biochemical and functional declines. Declining of basal metabolism rates, protein turnover, glucose tolerance, reproductive capacity, telomere shortening, and oxidative phosphorylation are related to the biochemical. Whilst, lung expansion volume, renal glomerular and tubular capacities, cardiovascular performance, musculoskeletal system, nerve conduction velocity, endocrine and exocrine systems, immunological defenses, and sensory systems are associated with the physiological declining (Baynes and Dominiczak, 2015). Some evidences indicated that, although members of a species develop into adults in the same way, even genetically similar or identical individuals, raised in identical conditions and eating identical food, but they may age differently (Baynes and Dominiczak, 2015). These aging differences are attributable to the life style particularly calorie and dietary restriction intakes, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and thus its implication on severity of damage, repair capacity, and error accumulation in cellular genetic material (Baynes and Dominiczak, 2015; Mihaylova et al., 2014; Mazzoccoli et al., 2014). Therefore, in molecular terms, aging can be defined as a decline of the homeostatic mechanisms that ensure the function of cells, tissues, and organs systems (Mazzoccoli et al., 2014). Accordingly, if the homeostatic mechanism can be repaired, the result is rejuvenation.

Abstract

Introduction: The success measurement of management application in an organization or company can be seen from the company or organization’s productivity. Customer perspective used to measure productivity is by looking patients’ satisfaction by measuring importance and performance matrices and customers growth. Objectives: To identify the performance achievement in UMM Medical Center (UMC) pharmacy, by measuring the customers perspectives. Methods: This research is using the research design of non experimental case study, descriptive analysis of the data obtained. Data were gathered retrospectively and prospectively. Retrospective data to figure the customers growth, as for prospective data to find out the customer satisfaction by importance and performance matrix. Results: Results indicated that: a) customers are not satisfied by the service in the pharmacy indicated by total servqual values of -0,227, b) dimensions of tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, and assurance currently are meeting the expectations of the customers and make customers feel satisfied towards the quality of service, c) there is no increase of Customer growth (0%) during year 2014 and 2015.Conclusion: The productivity improvement efforts of Pharmacy in UMC from customers perspective are not achieved optimally, the productivity improvement is needed.

Abstract

Introduction: Brown algae (Sargassum duplicatum) contains bioactive compound with natural antioxidant that may potentially decrease lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation process in diabetes mellitus. Objective: to prove the effectiveness of brown algae extract administration (150mg/kgBW; 300mg/kgBW and 450 mg/kGBW respectively) in reducing serum MDA and PCO levels in streptozotocin-induced sprague dawley rat. Methods: This experiment study used the post test only control group design. Twenty eight (28) Sprague dawley rats induced with Streptozotocin (STZ) 40 mg/kgBW (i.p) were divided into four groups (n=7). The first group was diabetic non treated group (control). The second to fourth groups were the diabetic rats which given brown algae extract (150mg/kgBW; 300mg/kgBW and 450 mg/kgBW respectively) for 30 days. Serum MDA and PCO levels were examined by using ELISA method. Data were analyzed using one way ANOVA.Results: There were no significant differences in serum MDA levels among groups (p=0,405). However, serum PCO level in group administered with 450mg/kgBW of brown algae extract decreased significantly compared to control group (p=0.001), group administered with 150mg/kgBW (p=0.001) and 300mg/kgBW (p=0,037). Conclusion: Administration of brown algae extract did not decrease serum MDA levels significantly. Administration of 450mg/kgBW brown algae extract is effective to decrease serum PCO level significantly.

Abstract

Lung cancer is a large heterogeneous family of malignancies, with tumors containing more than one subtype are very common. Over 50 different histologi­cal variants are recognized within the WHO typing system. Small Cell Lung Cancer comprises approximately 20% of all lung cancers and exhibits a neuroendocrine phenotype while Non Small Cell Lung Carsinoma (NSCLC) lacks these features and makes up the remaining 80% of cases. This case was reported in view of the rarity of this combination of morphologic patterns. The incidence of c- SCLC (Combined- Small Cell Lung Carsinoma) has been reported ranging from less than 1% to 14.6% of all SCLC. Mixed lung cancer in untreated patients suggests a common endodermal origin for c-SCLC which contains small-cell and non-small-cell pulmonary tumors. Quoix et al found that presentation as a solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN) is particularly indicative of a c-SCLC. Combined- Small Cell Lung Carsinoma contains a squamous cell and/or adenocarcinoma component. It’s becoming more important for pathologists to correctly subclassify NSCLC’s as distinct tumor entities, or as components of c-SCLC cause it’s more agrresive. A 46-year-old smoker man was referred because of rapid growth of a solitary nodule mass revealed by chest radiography with brain and limfonodes metastases. There was mixed histological feature including adenocarsinoma, squamous cell carsinoma and large cell carsinoma. The patient is dead after a few weeks later. It was revealed a panel immunohistochemistry stain (CK-7, CK-20, TTF-1, P63 and Chromoganin). It was concluded as c- SCLC.

Abstract

Introduction: Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) has been demonstrated to accelerate wound healing. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and collagen have an important role in wound healing. However, the effect of MSC on levels of PDGF and number of collagen has not been established. Objectives: To determine the effect of MSC on the levels of PDGF and the percentage of collagen in the burns healing. Methods: in this experimental study, 20 BALB /c mice were divided into 4 groups: a control group (G-0) injected with 2 ml of distilled water and group 1 (G-1), Group 2 (G-2), and group 3 (G- 3) injected with MSC at the dose of 1 x 104, 2 x 104, and 4 x 104 respectively. The burn wound was made by attaching a metal nail that had been heated for 20 seconds at the feet of mice. Levels of PDGF on day 2 (PDGF-2) and 7 (PDGF-7) was assessed by ELISA, while on day 10 excision of skin was done to calculate the percentage of collagen. Results: There was a significant difference in the levels of PDGF-2, PDGF-7, and the percentage of collagen ( P <0.05). Posthoc analysis showed that the levels of PDGF-2, PDGF-7, and percentage of collagen in the G-2 and G-3 was significantly higher than that of G-0, p <0.05. While the levels of PDGF-2, PDGF-7, and the percentage of collagen in the G-3 was significantly higher than that of G-2 and G-1 (p <0.05). Conclusion: Injection of MSC at a dose of 2 x 1044 and 4 x 1044 increases the levels of PDGF and the percentage of collagen.

Abstract

Introduction: Herbal remedies have been developed as a complementary therapy to increase sex hormones. The administration of the ethanolic extract of red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. Amarum) has been shown to increase spermatogenic cells, motility and morphology of sperm in mice. However, the effect of red ginger infusion on the level of testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) has not been done. Objective: to examine the effect of red ginger infusion on LH and testosterone levels of male Wistar rats.Methods: The study was designed as an experimental post-test only control group design. Twenty four male Wistar rats of 200-250 g body weight aged + 3-4 months were divided into four groups. a control group (G-1) was given distilled water 2 ml/day. Group 2 (G-2), Group 3 (G-3), and group 4 (G-4) were treated with 10%, 20%, and 40% infusion by dissolving 2 ml of ginger in distilled water. On day 15, blood samples were taken and assayed for LH and testosterone.Results: The one-way ANOVA test showed difference in levels of LH and testosterone between groups (p <0.001). Post Hoc LSD test results showed that the levels of LH of G-1 (0350) was significantly lower than that of G-2 (1082), G-3 (1 253), and G-4 (0923), p <0.005. While the levels of testosterone in the G-1 (0.2718) significantly lower than the G-2 (0.7797), G-3 (0.8285), and the G-4 (0.9142) (p <0.005).Conclusion: red ginger infusion for 14 days can increase the levels of LH and testosterone in male rats.
